Do you have a keen interest in all things related to space? If so, you might be wondering how to become an astronomer.

Astronomy careers , astronomer , astronomy jobs online

This is an ancient question. If you like to know stars, you are ready to become an astronomer.

Astronomy is a very exciting and challenging subject which include many of the other aspects of science such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and geology, and, more recently, even paleontology and biology.

Who is astronomer?

An astronomer is a scientist or amateur person who studies the nature of stars, galaxies and planets. To become an astronomer you must earn a doctorate (Ph.D.) and have expert knowledge of physics, mathematics and computer science. In spite of the tough prerequisites, the competition for jobs in this field is intense.

Astronomy is a field in which anyone can participate and even make useful discoveries! Amateur astronomers, often using only a pair of good binoculars, have discovered numerous comets. By using more powerful telescopes, amateur astronomers have discovered novae and supernovae. Many people build their own telescopes and observatories to study and photograph objects in the universe. Astrophotography has become a very popular and enjoyable hobby. Also, anyone with a computer can now participate in SETI's search for life in the universe. So far about two million people have participated. Below are some links to useful sites for anyone interested in amateur astronomy.

If you like to become an astronomer just follow us here!

sun eclipse 2009

were regarded as heavenly signs that foretell the future of the Emperor;
predicting eclipses were of high importance for the state. Over four millenniums
ago, two Chinese astrologers were murdered as they failed to
predict a solar eclipse.

The ancient Chinese believed that solar eclipses
occur when a legendary celestial dragon devours the Sun. They
also believed that this dragon attacks the Moon during lunar eclipses.
In the Chinese language, the term for eclipse was "chih" which also means "to
eat". One ancient Chinese solar eclipse record describes a

the exterior of the Zvezda Service Module.

The spacewalkers also removed straps, or tape, from the area
of the docking target on the Pirs airlock and docking compartment. The tape was
removed to ensure it does not get in the way during the arrival of visiting
Soyuz or Progress spacecraft. Fincke and Lonchakov later took photos of the
exterior of the Russian portion of the station to document its condition after a
decade of operation in the harsh environment of space. The photos will be used
to assess the condition of the outer surfaces and structural elements of the
station, including active components such as thrusters and vents.

Advanced -Astronomy , one
of the oldest sciences, is the study of celestial bodies such as planets,

or nighttime skies and measure their magnitudes and motions, searching to
find what they are made of and how they create their light.

An astronomer is a scientist who studies celestial
bodies such as planets, stars, and galaxies.

Historically, astronomy was more concerned with the classification and
description of phenomena in the sky, while astrophysics attempted to explain
these phenomena and the differences between them using physical laws. Today,
that distinction has mostly disappeared. Professional astronomers are highly
educated individuals who typically have a PhD in physics or astronomy and are
employed by research institutions or universities. They spend the majority of
their time working on research, although they quite often have other duties such
as teaching, building instruments, or aiding in the operation of an observatory.

Solar astronomy : Main article: Sun

At a distance of about eight light-minutes, the most frequently studied star is
the Sun, a typical main-sequence dwarf star of stellar class G2 V, and about 4.6
Gyr in age. The Sun is not considered a variable star, but it does undergo
periodic changes in activity known as the sunspot cycle. This is an 11-year
fluctuation in sunspot numbers. Sunspots are regions of lower-than- average
temperatures that are associated with intense magnetic activity.

Nasa Says : No Seats Available For This Flight !

Don't let the desert fool you. It's not always hot. In fact, in California's Mojave Desert where NASA and contractor employees are processing space shuttle Endeavour, it's freezing.

"It's 32 degrees out here," said Ken Tenbusch, Endeavour flow director. "Not easy when your teeth are chattering."

One of the major differences in processing at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center in California is location.

Within hours of landing at Kennedy, Endeavour would have been towed into one of the center's orbiter processing facilities -- a place where technicians have all of the resources they need right at their fingertips. But at Dryden, Endeavour is processed outdoors at the Mate-Demate Device with limited resources.

"Processing outdoors offers many challenges," Tenbusch said. "Over here, you are completely open to the environment. The wind comes right off of the mountains and if it rains, you're getting rained on."

The way orbiters are processed is different, too.

At Dryden, crews basically have to winterize the vehicle before it's bolted to a 747 jumbo jet called the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. Technicians power the orbiter down, safe all the hypergolic propellants and fuel systems, drain the water systems and close the nose and landing gear doors. Then, they install a large cone on the tail of the orbiter, which helps smooth the airflow around it during the ferry flight.

"In order to do that, you have to manipulate the engines and bring them together so the cone will fit over the top of them," said Randy Goodmon, Endeavour flow manager.

To perform these turnaround operations, about 250 NASA and contractor employees are working around the clock. Meanwhile, there are several systems engineers at Kennedy who can't wait to get their hands on Endeavour.

"You can explain and send pictures -- but it's clearly not the same as being next to the hardware," Tenbusch said.

Tenbusch and Goodmon say Endeavour appears to be in good shape. They even commented on the window that was hit by a meteor while orbiting Earth.

"The window is fine for the flight back to Kennedy," Goodmon said. "But it will be removed and replaced before Endeavour's next mission."

Even with the challenges, Tenbusch says his turnaround team is doing a great job preparing Endeavour for its piggyback ride to Kennedy.

And while many wonder if landing in California put Endeavour behind schedule for its next mission, targeted for May 2009, Tenbusch remains optimistic.

"There are ways to make up lost time. The two most prominent are overtime and diverting resources from one orbiter processing facility to another," Tenbusch said. "I truly believe the team will be able to respond well and make up the lost time."
